Wow is it HOT! Summer is definitely here, so here are a few things to remember:
Watch Children - School is Out
Drive Slow - observe the speed limits
Enjoy the summer - the pool is open
The opening of the pool brought quick relief from the already blazing sun. The children's pool has a new pump and now that the pool is in full swing, the new furniture has really become utilized. There is plenty of room at the pool so come on by.
Private parties are welcomed at the Planter's Row pool, but there are some guidelines that must be followed. Parties must hire extra lifeguards, provide adequate supervision and continually police party areas. Please contact Darin Scheidly at 297-0853 for details. We will be unable to handle parties on weekends due to the volume of expected members at the pool. Planter's Row residents current on their dues are permitted to have a private party.
The Facilities Committee is in desperate need of your help. The larger our community becomes, the more issues the committee must contend with. ID's are not made on a daily basis, so please allow 1 week for completion. Please contact Darin or Robin to get involved as we can only do so much with a few people. .
Please remember to pick up your trash at the pool. We don't have a litter patrol to clean up after parties or at the pool. Remember THIS IS YOUR COMMUNITY.
The beginning of the pool season always brings new pool issues. Current issues:
· Unacceptable behavior at the pool, i.e. horseplay, loud groups, and littering.
·
Help us wipe out these problems by taking responsibility for your surroundings
· Unauthorized guests
Please report to lifeguards
· Vending selections
Vending personnel have been informed of requests
· Trash & more trash
Only way to handle this is to police your own area. Thank You!
Please contact or get involved with the Facilities Committee to identify issues and suggestions.
We are planning a Tennis Tournament this summer, and will be needing help to organize this years tourney. If you are interested in participating please contact the Facilities Committee.

As summer approaches, it is important that we all continue to maintain the appearance of Planter's Row by maintaining our yards. Tall weeds in flower beds, tall grass, and untrimmed plants not only are an eyesore, but also can be a safety and home security problem. Please help the community by keeping your yard neat. Also, please consider helping your neighbors when they are away on vacation or if they are otherwise unable to maintain their yards.
At the end of 2000, the ACC will be considering changes for the 2001 landscape maintenance contract. Several of you have already contacted the ACC with concerns about maintenance issues with the common grounds. The ACC will try to address these issues as they are submitted, but occasionally the change requested is outside the scope of our existing maintenance contract. It is important for us to know about these issues now so that we can address them in the 2001 contract. We welcome any constructive feedback you may have on the maintenance of our common grounds. The goal of the ACC is to continue to reduce the cost and improve the quality of common grounds maintenance.
The Green Thumb (The Green Thumb column is intended to stimulate your interest and provide some help in keeping our properties looking good - and property values high. It only scratches the surface of things to do to keep your landscape areas beautiful. There are of course an endless number of more detailed sources including, publications, local nurseries and neighbors. Please let us know if you have information to share)
The information in last month's column concerning watering, mowing and weeds is still germane. As if those things weren't enough to keep you in the yard longer than you want to be, get ready for the insects, which love your yard more than you do. Some of them are hard to spot until their damage is well underway but you will know when the Japanese Beetles arrive. Although treating your yard to control the beetle larvae will have helped save your grass roots, keep in mind that these guys can fly for miles just to get to your plants and trees.
There are sprays available to help you control the damage they do and of course the "yellow bags" will be appearing everywhere. It is best to place these traps downwind from what you are trying to protect. And remember that the trap does its job by attracting the beetles. I sometimes wonder if they attract more than they kill, but seeing the bag full at least gives the feeling that you are accomplishing something.
If you are not aware of it, there are fire ants in the neighborhood. If a good-sized ant mound or hill appears almost overnight, beware. These critters are really small, but DO NOT try stomping them or next thing you know, your leg will be burning from their bites. Some folks are so allergic that Emergency Room attention is required. There are products on the market that will at least wipe out individual nests.
For information on specific weed and insect control products, let me recommend the knowledgeable folks at Alexander's. In addition to being convenient, they are one of our Yard of the Month sponsors. They can help you minimize the amount of time you need to spend in your yard, giving you more time too ...
YARD OF THE MONTH
Although it didn't quite happen during the first week of May, things did come together and the first Year 2000 Yards of the Month were chosen. Congratulations to winners Erin and Steven Littleson of 6 Harrow Ct. and Michelle and Jeff Jennings of 104 Colombard Ct.
A $25 gift certificate from The Secret Garden on Augusta St. was presented to one winner and a $25 gift certificate from Alexander's Other Door on E. Butler Rd. was presented to the other. As you have probably noticed, our new Yard of the Month signs are proudly on display at both homes.
June winners will be selected during the first seven days of the month, so keep those lawns trimmed and watch for the signs to be moving. Hopefully your yard work will be rewarded with a sign and gift certificate. The judges' biggest regret was that they could not start off by recognizing all of the beautiful yards in Planter's Row. But the season is long and many selections are yet to be made.
After living here for several years, I've just learned that you can have the Greenville News placed in the box under your mailbox just by calling the paper and making the request. This may not put you in serious contention for Yard of the Month, but at least you will know where to look for the paper when you go out in the morning. And it could also save some of your plants from damage.
Again, please remember that the owners of Alexander's and The Secret Garden have gone out of their way to support our Yard of the Month program. You are encouraged to patronize them and when you visit, please let them know that you are from Planter's Row and that you appreciate their support.
